FRENCH
REALISM
Honoré Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his sharp social commentary and satirical depictions of nineteenth-century French society. Daumier moved to Paris at a young age, where he studied art while working various jobs and became involved in the world of political caricature. He developed a distinctive approach to image-making that combined expressive line, exaggerated forms, and dramatic contrasts to critique the corruption, injustice, and pretensions of modern life. His subjects ranged from biting caricatures of politicians and lawyers to scenes of urban life and sympathetic portrayals of the working class. Deeply influenced by earlier masters such as Rembrandt as well as the social realities of his time, Daumier's work conveyed both humor and moral seriousness, setting him apart from his contemporaries. Though he faced censorship and even imprisonment for his political prints, his art later became highly influential, admired for its bold realism and powerful social insight.
